The Lehigh Poxystone

Everybody loves a good stonefly, at least everybody that likes to catch fish. This is a great all-around stonefly pattern that works very well for trout, steelhead, and bass. The nymph has a beefy silhouette, an attractive segmented body, just the right amount of flash, and the king of nymph ingredients... rubber legs. It may not have the right number of legs or wingcases as a real stonefly nymph but it doesn't seem to matter much, this fly catches fish!

Hook: Orvis 122J Nymph

Thread: Size 3/0 or 6/0

Tails: Turket Biots

Body: Larva Lace

Wingcase: Spinner Wing Film

Weight: Brass or Tungsten Bead

Special: Epoxy Over wingcase

Start the thread. I like to build a small ball of dubbing up behind the bead and then using my fingernails slide the thread and dubbing ball into the void behind the bead to lock it in place. Advance the thread to the back of the hook right in line with the barb.

Build a small ball of thread and dubbing at the back of the hook, this will help you to split the turkey biot tails. Tie in the two tails on the sides of the hook.

Make an aneled cut on the end of the Larva Lace and tie it in, after the first few wrapsyou can stretch the Larva Lace to reduce the tie in bulk. Tie the Larva Lace back to the thread ball that you used to split the tails.

Use thread and dubbin to build up a tapered underbody that gets thicker as it gets closer to the bead. Wrap the Larva Lace forward and tie off.

Tie in a 1/4" strip of Scintilla Spinner Wing Film. Dub a thorax with the thread ending up in the middle of the thorax and build a band of thread at that spot in the middle of the thorax. This band will give you a solid place to tie in your legs.

Tie in a a rubber leg on each side of the thorax and then dub over top of your wraps and right up behind the eye.

Fold the wing film over the thorax and tie it down. Add a drop of Devcon 2 Ton Epoxy over the wing film. You can use the 5 Minute type epoxies but the 2 Ton stuff usually ends up being much more clear. It's usually best to do at least a dozen of these guys at a pop, or at least a dozen poxyback flies. Line the flies up on some foam for easier application. The pot life for a batch of 2 Ton Epoxy is about 30 minutes so I usually let it set up for 15-20 minutes before I apply it so that it doesn't run too much. If it looks like it wants to run just turn the foam so that the flies are hanging upside down, the epoxy should be too thick to drip but make sure you have something underneath so you don't mess you table up. Adding poxybacks too your flies takes a little practice but makes an awesome durable fly.
