Sucker Spawn

Very easy and effective pattern for trout and steelhead. It is a misconception that the tyer must use angora yarn to tie the sucker spawn. We normally use a piece of McFly Foam, a yarn used to tie glo bugs. Separate a few strands as shown below and tie away. Any yarn could be used but fuzzy yarns get caught in a steelhead's teeth, the velcro effect, giving you a few extra moments to set the hook before ejection. McFly Foam has several advantages over angora yarn when used for the sucker spawn:

1. It's way more durable.

2. The colors won't fade like angora does.

3. It's cheaper.

4. It actually looks like a cluster of eggs when wet.

Hook: Orvis 62KC or 1641

Thread: Size 3/0 or G

Body: McFly Foam

Separate a few strands of McFly Foam from a larger strand. Start the thread. Thread color can be useful in adding a little contrasting color to this pattern. Advance the thread back to the bend of the hook. Tie in a piece of McFly Foam.

Make a loop in the McFly Foam and tie it down with two or three wraps. Make two or three wraps in front of the loop to prevent the thread from loosening. Repeat, making each loop a little bigger than the last, until you get to the front of the fly.

Clip the McFly Foam and tie off. You're done!
